‘You’re Sacked!’


“You’re sacked!” “It’s time to part ways.” “We are placing you on garden leave.” “We’ll pay you in lieu of notice.” These are all things you may have had to say, have heard said or have had said to you.

That they indicate a termination of employment is obvious, but what are the legal implications of these different phrases? When is the actual legal termination date? This might be more important than you initially think, as the termination date determines pay, benefits, bonuses, equity and limitation periods.
